Access to farming and nutritious food is shaped by local, state, and federal policies and programs. At Sustainable Food Center, our food policy work starts with direct outreach to farmers, community members facing barriers to food access, and distributors of farmed goods. By identifying challenges and obstacles, we create an actionable agenda to advocate for policies that support sustainable farming and ensure equitable access to fresh, nutritious food for all Texans.
Our Position Statements
Championing Fair Food Policy
At Sustainable Food Center, we are dedicated to advocating for policies that strengthen our food system, support local farmers, and ensure everyone has access to fresh, nutritious food. We collaborate with larger nonprofits that work on specific issues related to farming and food access with officials at the local, state, and federal level. Our food policy positions are focused on three key areas.
Ensuring Local Food for All
We are committed to ensuring that everyone has access to local, nutritious food by supporting solutions that strengthen sustainable food systems. This includes providing culturally significant food in communities and schools through both direct and institutional avenues, ensuring equitable and secure food for all.
Supporting Farmers Sustainable Success
We believe in empowering small-scale, regenerative farmers by providing opportunities to transition to sustainable practices. This includes advocating for access to land and capital to enhance farm sustainability and profitability, especially for those with limited resources and from underrepresented communities.
Strengthening Supply Chain Connections
We aim to bolster direct links between agricultural producers and both individual and wholesale buyers. This involves fostering relationships, streamlining distribution channels, and promoting transparency in the food supply chain to create a more resilient and responsive system.
Why Food Policy Matters
The food system in Texas faces significant challenges that impact both farmers and local communities. Small-scale farming is on the rise, especially among farmers with 100 acres or less and who have been producing for five years or less. However, complex policies and operational requirements make it difficult for these farms to thrive. This is a critical issue as small-scale farms are essential for providing local, nutritious produce. Our work influencing food policy can make a real difference.
Access to healthy food is also a major concern for many Texans, especially those who use programs like SNAP, WIC, and Double Up Food Bucks Texas. Supportive policies are crucial to expand and enhance these programs, ensuring that low-income families can access fresh fruits and vegetables. By advocating for policies that support small-scale farmers and enhance food assistance programs, Sustainable Food Center works to create a more equitable and sustainable food future. Our food policy efforts aim to improve food access, bolster sustainability, and ensure that everyone in Texas can enjoy the benefits of locally grown food.
How Food Policy Work Transforms the Food System
Double Up Food Bucks Texas
Our Double Up Food Bucks Texas program thrives thanks to our advocacy with state and local governments. We secure fiscal and regulatory support to expand and sustain this vital program, doubling SNAP and, in some cases, WIC benefits for fresh produce.
Farmers’ Markets
Running farmers’ markets involves navigating city permits and associated costs. Our policy work builds and maintains positive relationships with city officials, helping to secure the legacy of our existing farmers’ markets and pave the way for new ones.
Farm to School
The ability of schools to source locally produced food is influenced by state and school district policies. We advocate for policies that prioritize local food in school budgets, ensuring nutritious options for students.
Farmer Support
Supporting farmers requires advocating for fair policies on issues like water rights, sustainable agriculture, land usage, and business acumen. Our policy efforts help both new and seasoned farmers thrive.
Advocate for Food Equity
We need your voice to make a difference. Government leaders need to hear directly from you about your beliefs and goals when it comes to regenerative farming and equitable food access. SFC and fellow advocacy groups put out calls for individuals to petition their representatives around key issues that impact us all.
