School and Community Farm Stands
SFC Farm Stands are now Fresh for Less Mobile Markets!
These are spaces where families are able to purchase locally-grown, low-cost produce, engage in our local food system, and gain access to knowledge about cooking healthy, affordable food.
They are situated within neighborhoods and familial spaces where people already go to gather and connect - such as schools and community centers. Fresh For Less Mobile Markets accept Double Up Food Bucks, which doubles the value of purchases made using SNAP benefits. Cash is also accepted.
Each Fresh for Less Mobile Market is operated by Farmshare Austin, with promotional support from Sustainable Food Center and a dedicated group of community volunteers.
Who can visit Fresh for Less Mobile Markets?
Anyone is welcome! Outreach is prioritized toward families that live, learn, play and pray directly within the community where the farms stand is located. Mobile markets at schools are a great educational tool for student groups, or anyone looking to become more familiar with cooking at home and using seasonal produce.
Fresh for Less Mobile Market shoppers have noted benefits beyond an increase in access to nutritious, affordable food. Many of these benefits include:
- Exposing children to fresh produce
- Modeling healthy behavior in environments where children are already learning
- Community connections that may not have been made otherwise
- Increased cultural awareness
- Learning new recipes
