To the Farmers Who Feed Our Community: Thank You!

Part of our mission at Sustainable Food Center is to make sure that everyone has access to fresh, healthy, affordable food. All year long, each of our four Farmers’ Markets accept SNAP (previously called Food Stamps) and WIC (Women Infants and Children) benefits. In addition to these benefits, between early summer and early fall, SFC teams up with the Texas Department of Agriculture and WIC to encourage more families to come to Farmers’ Markets and shop from local farms. That program is called the Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) and it wouldn’t be possible without our amazing farmers.

Starting in the spring, SFC begins the distribution of booklets that contain a total of $30 worth of vouchers for mothers participating in the WIC program. These vouchers are distributed until the end of September and can only be used at Farmers’ Markets, providing a boost in sales for our farmers. This past season, SFC organized the distribution in over $69,000 in vouchers throughout the Greater Austin Area. That’s a lot of vegetables! This program wouldn’t be possible without our participating farmers who provide the freshest, tastiest produce that you could ever hope to find. So we would like to say thank you to all of the farmers we work with for keeping our community fed!
