Intro to Food Gardening
Our Introduction to Food Gardening classes are free, hands-on classes held in communities in the Austin-area that experience high rates of food insecurity and diet-related disease. These 3-part classes cover the basics of starting and caring for a food garden.
Why We Provide Free Gardening Classes
The act of gardening has positive health benefits and can help people keep up a healthy diet by growing their own fresh fruits and vegetables year-round. Our classes help participants develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to start an organic food garden.
Our Introduction to Food Gardening class series is the only free, comprehensive, hands-on, bilingual gardening education program in the Austin area.
Led by trained facilitators, our class series is unique because it:
Provides Free Resources
All participants receive free compost, potting soil, pots, plants and seeds to start their gardens.
Teaches Multiple Techniques
We teach in-ground and container gardening techniques so all participants can learn how to make the most of the space they have available for gardening.
Classes promote organic gardening and emphasize Central Texas’ unique climate and soils.
Makes Gardening Affordable and Accessible
We teach participants how to start and sustain food gardens in affordable ways. Classes are offered in English and Spanish.
