National Farmers’ Market Week began Sunday, August 2nd and runs through this Saturday August 8th. Though this is not an ideal time of year for farmers in Central Texas we still want to show our love and support the vendors. We have already kicked off a great week with our two weekday markets by cooking amazing food at Taste the Place, incredible music featuring Huck Johnson and the Jackknives and Dominique Garcia, and making sure our loyal customers – like you - have an opportunity to thank the vendors personally. Tuesday at SFC Farmers’ Market East we held a tour of the market with our partner Creative Action’s Kid Camp and you may have purchased your vegetables from one of their little helpers. Wednesday at Sustainable Food Center Farmers’ Market at The Triangle Austin Resource Recovery provided a compost class. Things only get more exciting from here.
With the week off to an amazing start, we hope to see you out this weekend celebrating at the Saturday markets at Republic Square Park and Toney Burger Center. At both SFC Farmers’ Market Downtown and SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley you can help spread the love during Love Your Farmer and Vendor by voting for your favorite at market. The winner gets a free booth for the day. All you have to do is stop by the information booth to pick up your sticker, put it on your favorite vendor and we will tally the votes at the close of market. We will have Taste the Place, imagination playground and other great activities. Ley Line will be playing music at the Downtown location and you can play along with Come Drum for Fun in Sunset Valley.
At SFC Farmers' Market at Sunset Valley we are honored to host a visit from Texas Department of Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller at SFC Farmers’ Market around 10:00 am. Also our Community Outreach and Education team will be putting on an amazing cooking demonstration at the Welcome Tent. We will have a fun photo booth for some great shots of you and your family at market. And as always Blue, the pony, will be there to give rides to your kids.
SFC Farmers' Market Downtown will be equally packed full of fun and excitement. SFC’s The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® will be doing a cooking demonstration right out of our cookbook. Sign up for the cooking classes on site that morning for 15% discount. The real excitement will be at the Taste Off. Think “Bobby Flay’s Throw Down” where he competes against a local business making their best food. Only in our version it is a vendor vs. an SFC staff member. Deepa with Anjore will be cooking against two of SFC’s Taste the Place volunteers in this head-to-head cooking competition. Sample the food and then vote for your favorite dish. The winner gets bragging rights and market cred’.
