Joy Casnovsky holds a BA in Geography and Spanish from the University of Texas and a Culinarian Certificate from Austin Community College. Prior to joining Sustainable Food Center (SFC), Joy served as a representative of the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia for two years. She has been at SFC for eight years, seven of which have been as Program Director of SFC’s The Happy Kitchen/La Cocina Alegre® Program. Under her leadership, the Program has more doubled the number of people served through a variety of innovative cooking and nutrition classes, offered in both Spanish and English. She’s a strong proponent of improving cooking skills and confidence among individuals so that they have the ability to positively shape their health. Also important to her are forming sustainable health and food systems policies that have a broad impact. She’s been interviewed and featured in Food Rebels, Guerrilla Gardeners and Smart Cookin' Mamas: Fighting Back in the Age of Industrial Agriculture, by Mark Winne, 2010 and is a regular contributor to the Grow.Share.Prepare monthly article in the Austin American-Statesman newspaper. Cooking, spending time outdoors, and traveling off the beaten path are a few of her favorite things.
